The History of the adidas Samba

The founder of the three-stripes brand, Adolf ‘Adi’ Dassler, designed the adidas Samba in 1949. He intended to craft a shoe that would help football players train on icy pitches and hard terrain, notably giving the collection a suction design on the gum sole. In addition to the sneaker’s practical features, it boasted an attractive upper with the recognisable three stripes on the sides and a gold trefoil design on the tongue.

It was around the ’80s that the Samba began to find a place in popular culture, appearing on the silver screen in Beverly Hills Cop, in which a character played by actor Eddie Murphy wore the trainers. After this appearance, the shoes made their way into various TV shows and movies, such as That ’70s Show, Trainspotting, and You.
